The Western Dead Hinterlands is one of the hardest zones in all of Anatemia, almost entirely covered by undead infested ruination. Before the first wars this area was the Western Hinterlands of Alamastique, it was a heavily populated area of mixed farming and forest with a large number of small villages. A large town called Holdgate was the farming capital, it’s central square was the centre of the farming world. The city of Northolt in the days before Alamastique becoming the great capital was a capital in its own right in the days of warring city states. 
Today it is a creepy zone of splendid decay, silent and eerie with the constant threat of death or undeath. The only safe places are the village of Dunwich and the old town centre of Holdgate, both of these are now the quest centres for the (futile) attempts to reclaim the land. Each of the old villages is filled with undead, the entire population of the formerly densely populated zone still wanders the region ready to attack the levellers. Also wandering through the zone and on into the Eastern Hinterlands is heavily armed undead patrol, once a human force that patrolled the region to find and defeat undead, they were turned undead and now walk the region to defeat and kill humans, must always be on guard for the death they bring. 
…and what is going on at the ancient deserted city of Northolt????
